Simple Lotion Recipe
My favorite base lotion recipe is
1/4 cup oil~ Grapeseed oil is a good stable choice
1 1/4 cup water~ distilled if possible
1/4 cup wax~ Emulsifying wax yields consistently smooth
1/2tsp vit E or a preservative
Up to 1 tsp of essential oil or fragrance of choice
Up to 1/2 cup glycerin can be substituted for an equal amount of water
Shea & various butters can be substituted for up to a teaspoon of the wax
Add up to a tsp each of titanium dioxide & zinc oxide if extra sun protection is desired.
Heat oil, wax & any butters til melted. Bring the water to a boil. Mix & stir the melted oil & boiling water. Add Vit E and any other ingredients. Stir well. Bottle in clean squeeze bottles. Shake every five minutes til it cools enough to set up. With Vit E as a preservative & a more stable oil base, it has a shelf life of 6-12 months..
I vary it per season. Winter lotions are thicker. Summer ones repel bugs & block sun. I usually low cook my oil in herbs for various things first.
